“I’m 50 years old, so I’m trying to change my career into something that will take me into my 60s.”—Peter Maino

Concerned with today’s changing world and job opportunities, Peter Maino wanted to ensure that he is able to compete in the job market until he is ready to retire. Realizing that education is key, he has been pursuing a B.S. in Business from Adelphi’s University College.

Reputation and proximity to his home are only a couple of the reasons why Peter chose Adelphi. And, after he graduates in Spring 2014, he is considering the M.S. in Healthcare Informatics program and the possibility of making a career change.

Having worked in information technology for about 25 years, which included a 14-year stint at CA Technologies, Peter is knowledgeable about the technical aspects of the industry. Now, he’s ecstatic about learning the healthcare portion.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in healthcare management is expected to grow faster than average.

“Healthcare is pretty big these days,” said Peter, who has a 3.98 GPA, two teenage children and whose wife works in Adelphi’s Office of Student Financial Services. “I’m 50 years old, so I’m trying to change my career into something that will take me into my 60s.”

Currently a business analyst for Thomson Reuters, Peter provides technical support for users of Clarity PPM, a portfolio and project management application that helps companies keep track of their investments, budgets and the time allocated to them. On an average day, he is in constant communication with colleagues in the United Kingdom, India and the United States, and he’s well versed in recent technological advances.

“Anything they are going to talk about technology-wise I wouldn’t have an issue with,” he said of the healthcare informatics program. “The medical side will be new to me.”

What’s also new is that the healthcare informatics program is adding a fully online option. Slated for launch in Fall 2014, the program will enable students from across the country and around the globe to earn the degree online.

Peter, though, prefers the personal attention he receives in the traditional program. “I really like the classroom setting,” he said.
